If you're half excited and half terrified, it's going to be one of the best things you ever do.

I’m not sure who first said it, but this quote, that sits on an old scrap of paper pinned to our kitchen noticeboard, helped us when we set up Twisted Citrus and it’s also been a great mantra for our kids. They know it by heart!

For someone who has struggled with nerves since I was a kid, it made me realise that those nerves are okay – just a natural part of doing something new. It’s normal to be scared of trying new things but the real challenge is pushing yourself to give those things a go anyway. And, boy, when you do, it feels good!

Relating this to starting a new business is easy. Half the time you worry that you are making a mistake and taking a too big a risk and at the same time you know it's the right direction because you feel excited about the challenge. So this quote puts those feelings into perspective –  for me anyway.

With our kids, the quote applies to one of them nearly every day. Whether it is the Weetbix Tryathalon, a new class or just saying Hi to a new face, the mixture of emotions (including the uncomfortable ones like fear, anxiety and trepidation) is something to be embraced. And when they are... good things do happen.

One day, I know the tatty piece of paper will find its way into the bin, but regardless the wise words will be recited and enacted in our family for years to come.
